VanKeuren Square Celebrates Ribbon Cutting

VanKeuren Square Celebrates Ribbon Cutting

Housing Visions and the Syracuse VA Medical Center celebrated the opening of VanKeuren Square on Friday, May 30.  The facility is Syracuse’s first permanent Veterans housing development with on-site supportive services provided by the VA.  Appel Osborne is honored to have been a part of this project.  Site work included green strategies such as porous asphalt in parking spaces, permeable pavers for a patio area and native trees and shrubs.  Green strategies for storm water management take advantage of the site topography with dry swales and a visually appealing terraced bioretention area alongside the building consisting of various native plants, stones and boulders.  Half of the building’s roof water and all nearby pavement areas are captured into swale and bioretention areas to promote infiltration.  Remaining roof water is collected into an underground rainwater collection tank for reuse.  Walks provide access to the building from parking areas and public bus transportation in front of the building.  Site amenities include benches, bicycle racks, raised vegetable planting areas, pergola, trash receptacles, a flag pole at the main entrance, and a private patio area with outdoor cooking grills.   To read an article about the project, click the link below:
