Rosamond Gifford Zoo Opens New Asian Elephant Preserve!

Rosamond Gifford Zoo Opens New Asian Elephant Preserve!

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Appel Osborne’s (AOLA) design team (Peter S. Osborne, Partner and Peter V. Auyer, Project Manager) attended the Grand Opening of the new Asian Elephant Preserve on June 30, 2011.  We were proud to be part of the design team to bring you this exciting project and look forward to working on future projects with the great Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

The new exhibit boasts a state-of-the-art elephant barn and 4 acre preserve with shade structures, sand wallows, misters and scratching posts.  Visitors can pause and spend time observing elephants or watching elephant demonstrations from a shaded overlook and seating area just off the existing boardwalk trail.

Since 1986, Asian Elephants have been listed as endangered.  The species is threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.  Today, there are fewer Asian Elephants in the wild than there are seats in the Carrier Dome!
